I’ve been in the Major Leagues for 8 years now, and I’ve seen most teams’ weight rooms. I’ve also noticed a consistent trend in most of these weight rooms: I haven’t seen a lot of specialized equipment. This is the highest level of baseball, yet all these state-of-the-art facilities still house the basic equipment (with the exception of a few high-tech machines here or there). This is persuasive evidence that the old way of training is still the most effective way of training. It’s not about the look, difficulty, or price of the equipment. Undoubtedly, all that modern equipment is great, but, “back in the day,” where was that kind of technology? Has anyone heard of Muscle Beach? There wasn’t any fancy, high-tech equipment on that beach, and it was called Muscle Beach for a reason.
Let’s also bring up all the different types of training out there today. There are innumerable specialized routines and workouts, and who really knows what works best and what doesn’t. Every trainer is an expert on his or her own workout routine. In reality, just getting to a gym and working out is enough. Regardless of how specialized the workout is it will benefit the one sweating and doing the work. I understand that time brings change and that lifting and training weren’t studied and tested as much as they are now; however, there have been countless strong, healthy athletes and non-athletes produced. Many of these former trainees did not have access to top-of-the-line or specialized equipment. Basic gyms, rooms and clubs were turning out strong, fit people who felt good about themselves and their bodies.
The result of this bare-bones fitness philosophy is the creation of my first business venture, a dream of mine for years, Old School Gym. My gym is a personal-training facility specifically designed to weight train boys, girls, men and women of every age and background. This is not a large scale gym, but it does have everything and more that one needs in order to get the most out of every workout. There will not be a lot of people training in the facility at the same time—that’s why it’s called PERSONAL TRAINING! I don’t want people waiting for equipment or worrying about someone looking at your every move from across the room. I want a clean, available and quality environment for each member. Professional and amateur athletes, lawyers, bodybuilders, wrestlers, entertainers, business owners, models, doctors, accountants…you name it, you’ll find them training at Old School Gym. What we use to transform bodies is basic and simple… quality equipment coupled with simple lifting philosophies, and, most importantly, an outstanding person doing the training!
The person doing the training, Neal Garner, has been my personal trainer for almost 10 years. I’ve come across a lot of trainers due to my profession, but none worthy of being the head of my gym. I trust Neal with my business, but, most importantly, with my clients.
